Periodic Billiard Trajectories in Smooth Convex Bodies

We consider billiard trajectories in a smooth convex body in R and estimate the number of distinct periodic trajectories that make exactly p reflections per period at the boundary of the body. In the case of prime p we obtain the lower bound (d − 2)(p − 1) + 2, which is much better than the previous estimates.

A Distributed Billiard Ball Simulation

This paper outlines the implementation of a distributed billiard ball simulation in C++ using the MPI message passing interface. The implementation is heavily modelled after the discussions and algorithms found in [Lubachevsky 1991] and [MacKenzie and Tropper 1996]. [Lubachevsky 1991] outlines an efficient but non-distributed simple rigid disc simulator that assumes no friction, spin, et cetera...

Density of the Periodic Points in the Interval Set

The dynamical system (f,R) is introduced and some of its properties are investigated. It is proven that there is an invariant set Λ on which the periodic points of f are dense.

Irregular diffusion in the bouncing ball billiard

We call a system bouncing ball billiard if it consists of a particle that is subject to a constant vertical force and bounces inelastically on a one-dimensional vibrating periodically corrugated floor. Here we choose circular scatterers that are very shallow, hence this billiard is a deterministic diffusive version of the well-known bouncing ball problem on a flat vibrating plate. Computer simu...

Computing Naturally in the Billiard Ball Model

Fredkin’s Billiard Ball Model (BBM) is considered one of the fundamental models of collision-based computing, and it is essentially based on elastic collisions of mobile billiard balls. Moreover, fixed mirrors or reflectors are brought into the model to deflect balls to complete the computation. However, the use of fixed mirrors is “physically unrealistic” and makes the BBM not perfectly moment...
